New Year, New You

Yesterday I roll into the gym, a gym now filled with more than twice the amount of people that were there just one week ago. I knew this was coming, as I was warned that the gym would have a full lot and valet parking after the first.

In any case, the fleet of spin bikes went from the usual 20+ available, to just 3 available by the time I was halfway through my workout. That's fine, except the puts me into close proximity to someone I don't know, while I sweat and sweat and stink blow my nose into a towel (probably not supposed to do that but bikers' noses run. At least when they're working hard. Don't believe me? Look at biking gloves sometime - there's a soft area near the thumb for wiping your nose). I don't care I don't care I don't care I don't care. Just interesting. More people to gawk at while I'm dying.

"His last vision was that of a 55 year old man's ass in bike shorts who was spinning in front of him."

I haven't touched the weights since session 1, where I found myself sore for a week afterwords. I think I'm gonna get on a pushup program first, so as to condition myself for that sort of work. I think.

Saturday I got up early looking to find a ride with some people. It was very cold, and riding to the bike shop I thought "I am struggling".

Spun around the lot for a half hour, met a guy who informed me that no ride was coming (and they're all riding mountain bikes this time of year, so...) and now that my hands were painfully frozen I booked it back home - and found that I was very strong. Maybe it was the wind? I dunno. I suspect the working out is working out.

As for my weight... patience. Getting there.

Re-evaulating RSL (and a sprawling gigantic mess of everything else)

Ok, so I'm probably not jumping ship yet...

Maybe the Eskandarian/Cunningham trade is going to be good for the team. At least they're attempting to do something, which is probably better than watching the same team trot out and lose every week.

So.

Yup.

Now this:

May Rides 17 Distance (miles) 527.48 Average Speed (mph) 16.00 Calories Burned 24,290

The local bike club (to which I don't belong), CIBA, has a 500 miles in May goal to coincide with the race... Well I'm gonna kill that goal. I'm not happy with my average speed.. that could use some improvement.

How many miles have you ridden?

To lose a pound, you need to burn 3500 calories than you consume... which means that theoretically, I should be down 6.94 pounds... though I don't always track calories when I ride. I'm actually pretty close to that on the weight loss. Hmm.

Hoping to hit 170 or less this summer. We'll see how it goes. When it gets cold again I'm hiring a trainer. That should be exciting. Or deadly. I'm still carrying a really high body fat percentage. Like 23% or something.

YAY! BEER TONIGHT!

Went to IU Dental School for my initial checkup diagnosis thing, looks like it's gonna be quite a bit easier on my budget than my original $8000 estimate. So good. I can spend more money on bike stuff.

Just received Old Joy on dvd. It's a movie I'd like to share with my camping/hiking friends, but I fear they'll just say it's boring. Anyway.

New Queens of the Stone Age leaked. Sounds pretty good at low work-level volume. They're playing a show in Indy... two tickets would be like $90. But QOTSA have released nothing but great albums, in my opinion, so maybe it's worth the money. I dunno. Kickin' it around. I dig em.

Anybody read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle? That just showed up too.

RAIN WEEK is always a little off schedule due to the ride being on a Saturday.

This is the same schedule (adapted from here) that I worked off of training for last year's RAIN ride where I finished 216th of 855 finishing riders (1200 or so registered) (links to an excel document).

This year the schedule sure seems like a lot more work. I'm sure Gina, who is planning on her first ride this year, is thrilled.

The schedule worked really well though, even in last year's 90-some degree weather, so I'll stick with it. Maybe by then I'll have a new bike. Because that's just what I need.

I wondered how I'd feel about riding RAIN again this year, but just seeing that registration has opened has me pretty excited. I guess that means I enjoyed myself. This year I'm considering finishing and then adding on another 40 miles, just to get my double century ride badge... it's not very often that you're that close to 200 miles, so it might make sense to attempt.

Now if I could just get more of my friends involved...

and that's how you go from 235 to 183

Man I'm excited.
