perry steam plant
I had this idea for a series of posters based on what some might consider eyesores - the first thing that got me thinking of that was the perry plant, below, which looms over the southwest corner of downtown Indy, spewing out what might just be steam.. but the place always reminded me of Captain Planet's pollution factories - which, to be honest, I never watched Captain Planet, but I seem to remember Nate talking about pollution factories, which I think is some funny shit.
There's a building, or a couple of building in East St. Louis, that, as a kid, I always considered landmarks, despite the fact that they were half torn down. Same idea here, I guess, just buildings or places that shouldn't really be celebrated, but somehow end up that way in my head anyway.
This isn't a done thing - I really need to learn to use illustrator to do these well enough - but it is something..

When you find yourself in over your head.
Saturday night we were out with friends, drinking was involved, there were mentions of strip clubs, everyone was together and happy, and I was not drinking.
I was not drinking because I had a bike race the next day.
At some point in the evening it occurred to me: I've romanticized cyclocross. I like the comradery (at least reading about it). I like the people. I like the idea of an hour of suffering. I love bicycles. It's a club I want to belong to.
But Saturday night I realized I'd rather be having fun with the friends that I already have than worrying about bikes.
Sunday I woke up early. Multiple times. When I finally got up, I had some cereal. My stomach was unhappy. Nerves. I got dressed an headed to the race.
I got to the race, signed in, pinned on my number. Only like 3 hours early. I didn't want to miss anything. I was a wreck.
I warmed up like three times. I test rode the track between races. It wore me out. I thought "OK, there are other guys here that look to be more out of shape than you. There's even a guy that's grossly out of shape. You'll be ok. You can hang at the back, maybe you won't finish last. Maybe you can just have fun with it."
Eventually the race came. Here I was. I was doing it.
I lined up toward the back. We took off. It was muddy. I was in a race. I was ok.
It didn't take long for me to fall through everyone. But I was ok with that. I knew it was a learning experience. I was measuring my effort. The first lap was hard, but there were still people behind me. Good.
As the race went on, I just got passed. And passed. I passed no one. I could barely breath. There was nowhere to hide, nowhere to catch my breath. The course was flat, but so muddy that even in the easiest gears everything was an effort.
My lap times were remarkably consistent after lap one. Remarkably slow.
I did accept two beer hand-ups. So there's something.
I finished a lap down. Second-to-last in class (the other guy's bike broke). Ahead of some guys in the 45+ class.
It was honestly the hardest thing I've ever done.
That's not even fair to say. Today I feel fine about it. But when I was done?
I was riding around, knowing I was a lap down, scared to death that in order to finish I'd have to make up that lap. So when I stopped? I wasn't even sure I had finished. I didn't care. I didn't want any more of that. It had taken everything I thought I loved and smashed it.
And I'm better for it. I still love it. Just not the same way.
Don't get me wrong. The people were great. It was nice to accomplish something. I'm glad I did it. But it was so much harder than I ever expected. And at this point in my life, I don't really need that sort of challenge/reward. My life is pretty full already. I should be in better shape - I'll be in better shape, but cyclocross?
Who thought that was a good idea?
I know it's a no guts, no glory. That's a beautiful thing. The people out there who put in all that effort deserve more respect than I could have ever imagined. It's fucking brutal. To love it? I don't know how that works.
Two hours later, I was sitting on my couch, in my living room, short of breath. Jesus.
I won't be doing cross again this year, not at 207 lbs. I've been 183 before - that seems like a reasonable weight to try again. And I might try again next year, in better shape, just to know how much difference fitness can make.
But right now? I'll watch. And offer beer hand-ups.

Old Map

so every once in a while i'll stumble across something i like a ton and i'll just go and remake it, for practice, or to generate new ideas, or whatever. this is one of those. (the original is overlaid, if you click that thing it should load HUGE. Ok, maybe not huge, but bigger.)
interestingly enough (at least to me), it looks like michelin's current maps are these ugly bright red or photography laden pieces of crap.

So that's depressing.

this is done. sorta
Remember this? Here's this.

the funny thing is that when i dropped the bike a joe's to have the brakes rerun, i fond myself in bike shop full of bikes just like the one below, except these were better suited for my mission. and at around $300 they were probably cheaper than all the money i threw into this one.
so i dunno. i might give this bike away, eventually.

reprieve
last night was to be my last competitive soccer game ever.
i've played this whole season horribly. both physically and mentally i have not be up to my or anyone else's standards. sure, my teammates are nice, i can run out there and act like i know what i'm doing, but when thinking over the season, i could think of very few (less that four) instances where i felt like i was competent. basically i was running around trying to get in the way, and failing at that.
*
as much as i appreciate the coaches i've had throughout my 30 so years of soccer, it recently occurred to me that the level of coaching i'd had wasn't exactly great. tactically or positionally, i've learned more in my post high school career than i ever did throughout high school. where to run, how to space, all of that - it was all very elementary until recently. it's still elementary, actually, but at least now I think i know why i should do certain things.
*
when i showed up to the field last evening, a strange thing happened - i warmed up and felt good.
every week i'd show up, run around a bit, and just feel like a stumbling pile of bricks. but yesterday, i just felt... comfortable.
so when our playoff game started, i took up position in defensive midfield, settled in, and just did everything i wanted to do. i forced the opponent to his/her right foot (which is where 90% of players are going). i made the quick short pass. i won the ball. it was weird.
our team has not been particularly good this season. we've had fun. but as we approached the later minutes of the game, we were ahead 1-0.
and then our goalie cleared the ball into an oncoming striker's face. it went back over the goalie and into the net. 1-1.
with about 2 minutes left, we went up again. 2-1. as we worked very hard those last two minutes, i felt good. i was happy when the whistle blew. 2-1. we win.
and then we were informed we had to play another game. against a team of college players. we were also now short of players.
we borrowed some players from the team we had just beaten. we packed in the box. we played steady defense. we didn't really bother pushing up the field. at half it was 0-0.
we were surprised.
second half. same as the first. 0-0. extra time. and then they scored.
we played out the whole extra period (just 3 minutes because of oncoming darkness). we had a minute left. we pushed everyone up the field. our goalie actually scored the tying goal. it was way more exciting than it should have been. and then the whistle blew. penalty kicks.
i knew i wanted one.
i took the first. i scored.
unfortunately i don't think anyone else from our team did. so we lost.
but fuck, that was fun.
so much for retirement.

froggy went a'bikin'
today i stumbled across the miyata bikes website. miyata is a japanese bike company, who happened to manufacture a late 80's/early 90's bike i own. it was a very nice bike, and then i sort of ruined it by taking all the gears off.
in any case, i don't ride the bike.
i've been wanting a simple singlespeed bike - which is what i turned the miyata into - for a while now. something a little more comfortable. something a little more relaxed.
so when i saw this today..

i decided to go ahead and buy some parts for the miyata.
first off, mountain bike style handlebars. then some new brake levers. then grips for the handlebars. then some old-style platform pedals.
$50 later it's on it's way to my house.
we'll see what happens next.

i should mention
although work has been rough as of late, i very often have moments where i think that things are going swimmingly. we have so many great friends, regular fulfilling entertainment, respect of people who matter to us, just enough money to do most of what we want - i don't want to take it for granted. i often think that things can't be as good as they've been forever, that the wave eventually crashes.. but for the time being, it's very good to be riding atop it.
i don't know if we've worked hard to be here or if it's dumb luck, but it's nice to be confident in what we do and to have a life that's what we want. so to whomever is responsible - and i have no idea who that is - thank you.

continued
the soccer team is now 1-3. maybe 1-4? in any case, we played a man (woman) short last evening and lost 2-1, mostly because I was the last defender against a guy I should have just tackled but instead watched run by me very quickly on his way to a goal.
that was the first goal, actually, so nevermind.
we are in the slow months for hbg, and fall has set in and i'm quite happy with the weather. we're working on a podcast project, starting with a test this evening on jason's front porch. should be interesting..

um
Soccer week 2.
Well I decided that I was fat and horrible and really the only way to fix that is to not be fat. The horrible part might fix itself if I'm not fat. At least I could run around and be a nuisance.
I found this University of Michigan off-season training program, and knowing that I've never been in shape enough to play college soccer, I decided that age 35 was the perfect time to get that way.
Really I just thought "Well I used to do stuff like this, and I enjoyed it" so I figured why the hell not. I mean, I'm not gonna fly through these drills, but I can at least try them out.
So I started by running 2 miles. I ran 1 mile, stopped for a moment, shook myself out, then started running the other mile. Got to about 3/4 of the way through that mile and walked for a minute of so. My legs hurt. That was Tuesday. Game was yesterday (Wednesday). I didn't hurt myself, so that was an improvement over last week. And we won, which was weird.
Today I've got to hold a rail when walking down steps. Sideways. Well, I can walk down normally, but very very slowly, and it's painful.
But I'm doing it! Right?
Last night I asked Gina if maybe I should just realize I'm 35 and stop doing stupid shit like this. She said no. I agree.

We're gonna ride this out and it's gonna get better eventually
I'm playing soccer again. Playing might be the wrong word. I'm actively watching soccer while on the field.
Last evening I entered our game nursing a slight groin pull that I seem to have sustained while climbing under a desk at work. I left the game shortly after with what seems to be a pair of strained groin muscles on both sides of my body. It was painful to sit. Or stand. Or drive.
Today I'm taking many aspirin.

Agent Orange at Wikipedia
In 1991, the US Congress enacted the Agent Orange Act, giving the Department of Veterans Affairs the authority to declare certain conditions 'presumptive' to exposure to Agent Orange/dioxin, making these veterans who served in Vietnam eligible to receive treatment and compensation for these conditions.[60] The same law required the National Academy of Sciences to periodically review the science on dioxin and herbicides used in Vietnam to inform the Secretary of Veterans Affairs about the strength of the scientific evidence showing association between exposure to Agent Orange/dioxin and certain conditions.[61]
Through this process, the list of 'presumptive' conditions has grown since 1991, and currently the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has listed prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, multiple myeloma, type II diabetes, Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma, chloracne, porphyria cutanea tarda, peripheral neuropathy, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, and spina bifida in children of veterans exposed to Agent Orange as conditions associated with exposure to the herbicide. This list now includes B cell leukemias, such as hairy cell leukemia, Parkinson's disease and ischemic heart disease, these last three having been added on August 31, 2010. Several highly placed individuals in government are voicing concerns about whether some of the diseases on the list should, in fact, actually have been included.[62]

Keys to the city
Drinks were served. An organist played gospel music. The crowd danced on a concrete floor. And the guest of honor was surrounded by his friends in this unexpected party setting — the garage of an old Cass Corridor locksmith shop.

Fulham Premier League 2011-12 team guide
At £190m, the club's debt is greater than any other in the Premier League, except Manchester United and Chelsea's. So it is no wonder the fans tolerate Mohamed Al Fayed. Last season he told anyone who objected to his statue of one-time Craven Cottage attendee Michael Jackson to "go to hell".

I want no one, no one wants me
I guess I should write down somewhere that this was the year when I started being ridiculously allergic to the dumbest stuff. Like the fact that I break out when I go on bike rides and get hot. Or that sometimes I'll just look at my arm and realize the whole thing is broken out in hives. Or that after particularly hot bike rides I get genuine heat rash.
I have no idea where any of that came from, but my usual healthy techniques of saying "hey fuck that, i'm healthy" (see my blood pressure, for which I stopped taking medicine less than a month into the prescription) doesn't really work when there's a thing growing all over your skin.
so. yeah.
but seriously. fuck that.

fast times at the ok corral
I'm tired of looking at that photo of myself. I've retired those jeans now. I was quite fond of them and now I hate them.
There's a pretty good chance I'd hate anything I wore in that photo shoot though. Like my glowing red head. Sunblock is your friend, but I'm trying to look old fast, and I've heard that the sun can make you look leathery. I'm thinking like guys in westerns leathery. That's a good look. I want to ride a horse and shoot people.
Here's a list of things I've started and not finished.
1) bus trip to st louis for 30 people
2) interview with a homebrew shop (months ago)
3) interview with a new brewery (week ago)
4) beer dinner (still planning)
5) bicycle training for god knows what
6) harassment of jon (not that jon, the other jon) and ted (sorta) about putting together food truck friday (complete with this poster)

i started going to the gym again this week. i have no idea why.
we've never done the whole big "spring cleaning" thing at our house. since we've owned it. i feel bad about that. not sure why.
i haven't washed my car in over a year, probably. the interior was last cleaned at the factory, i'm guessing.
i wrote a list of household things to do on the chalkboard at home. i wonder if i'll ever do any of them.
oddly enough, i feel like I am accomplishing things, though. weird.
